Everyday Chinese Conversation, Explained
You may not find these in textbooks, but Chinese people use them every day. Learn them and your Chinese will instantly sound more natural.
Greetings
("Have you eaten?") is a greeting, not a real question about food. ("Yes, and you?").
您 is the polite form of 你. Use it with older people, customers and strangers.
Keeping the conversation going
你去过哪儿?」The most common problem for learners is answering without reacting. After someone speaks, react first and then ask a question, and the conversation keeps going: 是吗? ("Really? Where have you been?")
When you don't understand
Not understanding is normal. Don't go silent; just say so, and people are usually happy to slow down.
Being polite
不好意思 is lighter than 对不起. Use it when you interrupt someone or make a small slip; save 对不起 for real apologies.
Saying yes and no
Chinese people often refuse indirectly. 我再想想 ("I'll think about it") or 下次吧 ("Next time") often simply mean "no".
Saying goodbye
慢走 ("walk slowly") is what hosts say to departing guests, meaning "take care on your way". Guests don't say it.
